El GrecoEl Greco was a Greek-born Spanish artist known for his ecstatic depictions of religious scenes. Implementing a mannered elongation of forms and ember-like colors, he produced works such as The Burial of Count Orgaz (1586), which are both haunting and dynamic. Born Doménikos Theotokópoulos in 1541 in Crete, Republic of Venice (present day Greece), he was trained as an icon painter before moving to the artistic mecca of Venice in 1567 to study under Titian. While in Italy, he traveled to Rome to copy the techniques of Renaissance masters, including Michelangelo and Raphael. Moving to Madrid in 1576, he hoped to acquire the patronage of the Spanish Court of King Philip II but was unsuccessful in doing so. The artist settled in the city of Toledo in 1577, where he acquired the name El Greco (The Greek), along with church commissions and critical acclaim. The artist died on April 7, 1614 in Toledo, Spain. Similarly to other enigmatic artists of his era, El Greco was brought back into art historical discourse during the late 19th century. Today, his works can be found among the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Louvre Museum in Paris, the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the Museo del Prado in Madrid, and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
